Spread the word, but don’t tell the cats. The dog show began with island residents Bill and Jane Moore, who liked to judge island dog’s by features such as “best nose” and “cutest tail.” Over the years the competition has turned much more serious, of course, because Boca Grande is – if nothing else – a down of dogs and dog lovers. The show has been held every two years since 2000. The recipient of all proceeds raised by the Boca Grande Woman’s Club Dog Show will go to our local Suncoast Humane Society. The 2015 show raised more than $13,000 for the organization. Entry into the dog show is $25 per dog and applications can be found at stores island-wide, including Fugate’s, Hudson’s Grocery and the Boca Grande Club. The festivities will begin on Friday, March 31 with a cocktail party and will continue on to the next morning as the show opens. So polish up those pearly whites, groom that sleek coat and come down to the Dog Show on April 1.
