Boca Beacon archive photo Looking Back (Excerpts taken from Boca Beacon archives, early 1990s) The sites have been picked, the approvals have been received and the money has been appropriated to construct three artificial reefs off Cayo Costa and Gasparilla Island. Concrete pilings from the old Peace River Bridge will be used to construct the reefs. John Brantley, a private businessman who owns the company, Structures, Inc., built the Albert Gilchrist Bridge that spans over the Peace River, has offered to donate the equipment to remove the concrete stumps of the old bridge. The labor and the expenses of the operation will be paid for with governmental monies. The state parks and recreation department has put up $20,000. Both Lee and Charlotte counties have appropriated $5,000 each. Marine Biologist Dr. Heywood Matthews, head of the Florida Sea Grant Artificial Reef Resource Team, scientifically chose the three sites. March/April 2017 GASPARILLA ISLAND 35
