ENVIRONMENT A huge variety of birds and animals call Englewood home, all or part of the year. There isn’t a day that goes by when you won’t have the opportunity to observe something magical in the sky, in the water or on the land. IS IT A TORTOISE, A TURTLE OR A SEA TURTLE? Just as you learn the difference between an alligator and a crocodile, eventually you learn how to tell a turtle from a tortoise. One way to remember is that all shelled reptiles are turtles, but only those who live on land are tortoises. Gopher tortoises have front feet that look like shovels and sturdy back “elephant” legs. The top part of their shell is mostly flat and they are gray or tan and often blend into their surroundings. They are listed as a threatened species on the endangered species list. They’re the ones digging those very deep burrows and might be the ones stopping traffic as they crawl across the street. PHOTO BY JUDY RUSSELL PHOTO BY TOM NEWTON PHOTO BY SUSAN SMITH 2017 7
