Jesuit golf won the District title and was Region runner-up he Tigers captured their 11th consecutive District title, fi nished runner-up in the Region, and placed 4th at State under coach Nico Hohman, Jesuit’s best State result since 3rd-place in 1997. Max White ’19 was the individual District champion at Temple Terrace, outdueling teammate Kaiser Hartmann ’17 by a stroke, 74-75, and White was individual Region runnerup at Sebring with a 74, with Grayson Maddox ’19 and Matt Zloto ’17 carding 77s to tie for fourth place. At State on the annually brutal Mission Inn Resort course over two days, Jesuit was led by Connor Murphy ’19 (81-81) and Maddox (83-80). BOWLING CROSS COUNTRY SWIMMING Jesuit had another banner season in the pool under coach Bill Shaffer, capturing its 20th consecutive District title, 8th straight Region title, and placing 3rd at State in a close three-way fi nish, following its State runner up results in 2014 and ’15. The Tigers brought home an individual state championship, with the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Sam Sands ‘18, Chris Jennings ‘18, Stephen Dawes ‘17, and Will Sands ‘17 earning the gold medal. At the Region Meet, Jesuit more than doubled the point total of the runner-up and advanced 10 swimmers to State. The team also helped raise $10,589 for the Moffi tt Cancer Center at the 10th annual Spike and Splash event at the Academy of the Holy Names. JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2016-17 19 Jesuit bowling set new school records for scoring averages esuit was 12-3 in the regular season under coach Ted Beil and advanced to the State Tournament for the 5th straight year. Ethan Sutton ’18 set a school record with a 208.9 average, and Kollin Boje ’17 joined him as the fi rst Tigers to eclipse a 200 average with a 200.6. Jesuit’s attempt at a 4th straight District title came up short by just a few pins, but the Tigers were one of just 28 schools in Florida to qualify for State. Sutton was individual District runner-up, Kevin Dinan ’17 (181.2 avg.) placed 3rd, and Trace Nuss ’19 (193.1 avg.) was 6th. Boje set a new record with a 740 3-game series and rolled his second career 300 game. He is the only Jesuit bowler to roll a 300 since it became a Varsity sport in 2007. Recap FALL SPORTS T he Tigers were District runners-up this fall under coach Jim Ranieri, and John Robbins ’18 captured the individual District championship. Robbins covered the 3.1-mile course in 16:44 to prevail over a fi eld of nearly 100 runners. Also scoring for Jesuit at District were Parker Maddox ’20 (8th, 18:03), Rhett Broz ’17 (11th, 18:12), Austin Echenique ’17 (16th, 18:20), and Oliver Petrillo ’20 (19th, 18:36). Robbins was runner-up at the Region Meet in Estero, fi nishing in 17:19, and he recorded a Top 20 fi nish at State. Among the highlights J T of the regular season was a team title over 28 schools at the Mitchell Invitational, led by the 2nd-place Robbins (17:38), Broz (14th), and Echenique (19th). Hermes (left) and head coach Bill Shaff er with the State Champion 200 Freestyle Relay Jesuit outscored opponents by 33 points a game this fall FOOTBALL Jesuit fi nished undefeated in the regular season for the second straight year under head coach Matt Thompson and advanced to its second straight State Semifi nal, succumbing at eventual State Champion Plantation American Heritage, 21-14. The Tigers fi nished 12-1, outscored opponents by an average of 44-11, and are 25-2 the past two seasons. Jesuit defeated Tampa Catholic for the 17th straight year, 34-14 at TC. Named 1st Team All-County by the Tampa Bay Times were OL Jake Moore ’17, DE Anthony Nelson ’18, LB Braden Gilby ’18, and P Aidan Swanson ’19, along with PR Travell Harris ’17 and RB Malik Davis ’17 (see Harris and Davis, p. 18). Camden Bauman ’17 led the state in scoring among kickers.
