77 GASPARILLA MAGAZINE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 When we open a book together, we close it in greater harmony proposed generating this activity for our island, calling it “One Island One Book,” with the program name evolving to “One Big Grande Boca Book Club. “The focus was on nonfiction. During the first season the book was “My Father, My President” by Doro Bush Koch, with the addition of “Millie’s Book” by Barbara Bush. “Elephant Company” by Vicki Croke was the featured read the following year, and Croke was the guest lecturer for the culminating event at The Gasparilla Inn Beach Club. In both the first and second season of the OBGBBC, children from The Island School, along with individuals from the Royal Palm Players, Grande Glee and over 200 community members participated in celebrating the theme of the common read. As we enter our third year, the committee has selected “The Soul of a Chef ” by the renowned author and chef Michael Ruhlman. This chosen genre in the field of food and cooking should afford many interesting options for discussion and for various community constituencies to participate. His topic embraces the culture of food and chefs in America today and promises to be one of universal interest to all generations, be they cooks or consumers. The desired effect of the OBGBBC is to add a rich sense of connection and affirmation, and to gain from sharing a common literary experience. We invite you to join us on Saturday, January14, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Boca Grande Community Center auditorium. (Please note the date change from the Friends program guide). A limited number of sponsor and reserved seating tickets are available. Sponsors are needed to help underwrite costs and will receive reserved seating in the auditorium, as well as an invitation to a special event with Mr. Ruhlman.
