50 Ever wanted to take your out-of-town guests somewhere new that is accessible by boat? Capt. Tom Healey, also known as “The Boat Man,” is a veritable wealth of information on where to eat, where to drink and where to play in your boat. In this article he gives us some great ideas as to where to go from Englewood down south to Captiva and over to the Peace River. This is a great guide to keep in your boat. Starting a bit to the north we are heading to The White Elephant. It is located on Manasota Key, tucked up next to Chadwick Park. From Boca Grande head north through the ICW up to the Tom Adams bridge. There is a large sand bar on the port side as you head north, so make sure to check your charts before you make the lefthand turn back to Manasota key. There is a large mooring area that you will see straight ahead. I like to run on the righthand side, but be careful of the moored sailboats. There is also a large sand bar on the right. Follow the orange crab pot markers they are actually there to mark the northern sandbar border. Run all the way to about 50’ from the sea wall and make a right hand turn and you will see the large two-story building. That is the White Elephant. Docking is good but it can fill up on holidays and weekend. The owner Pat always has great entertainment there for the weekend and evening crowd. My wife Heidi loves the blackened mahi-mahi sandwich and I like the wings served with a rum runner.
