44 Book Review A Book Review By Jonathan Herbert Les Standiford’s “Last Train To Paradise” is a telling story about Henry Flagler’s inescapable dream to connect Miami and Key West with a railroad. The details, combined with the author’s perspective, push the reader inside the complexities of man versus nature.. Hurricanes and the railway are as central to the conflict as Flagler. This towering record of Florida history is a must read. Flagler’s official announcement that he intended to ride his own “iron” across the Straits of Florida to Key West did not come until July 1905, but it seems clear that he had been destined to make the attempt since the midsummer of 1898, at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. The author has written 20 bestselling novels. He wrote the John Deal mystery series, as well as a narrative history, “The Man Who Invented Christmas.” He is also the director of the creative writing program at Florida International University.
