39 GASPARILLA MAGAZINE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 Swayze opens up her home every December and hosts a studio party and sells her work at reduced prices. “It gives people who may not normally be able to afford art an opportunity to purchase a piece,” she said. Carroll was on the steering committee that saved, restored and created the Hermitage Artists’ Retreat, an international artists’ retreat connected to the Greenfield Foundation. It is in what was her mother's old house on the beach. Sarasota County has a 99-year lease on the property and an art alliance group manages it. The organization invites prestigious artists from all around the world to come, stay and create art there. Authors, photographers, painters and others from various disciplines visit the historic campus nestled among mangroves and sea grape trees on Manasota Key. Carroll was also on the board of directors at the Englewood Art Center when they raised the money to expand and build what has become one of the most vibrant community art centers in the area, now operated by the Ringling School of Art & Design. She was chosen as one of 10 North American artists to participate in the first-ever outdoor art festival in Japan, the Yokohama International Open Air Art Fair, in October of 2009. “I experienced an amazing cultural exchange that enriched my life immensely when I was there,” she said. Carroll also teaches art to home-schooled children in Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties, and also teaches an adult fun art class for beginners. Students experiment with many different forms in the hope of finding one that feels right so they will continue to learn more about it. “I sponsor several programs in schools and in my studio, and I try to help keep original art alive,” she said. “I am honored to have a scholarship named for me at Lemon Bay High School, sponsored by our Rotary Club.” A coloring book launch/signing party was held at the Hermitage Artists Retreat on September 24, and many fans, family, friends and other artists attended the event. At the party Carroll announced she’s planning another coloring book, currently in the works. Look for it to be published in March of 2017. For more information, visit carrollswayze.com. G M
