35 GASPARILLA MAGAZINE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 Who wants to draw like Carroll Swayze? You can be guaranteed of a heavy show of hands in answer to that question, and our local living legend has now provided you with an opportunity to (in a way) do just that with adult-inspired coloring book. Carroll Swayze has been creating beautiful pieces of art since she was a young girl, and her distinctive beachthemed, aquatic animal works hangs in some of the most prestigious homes and galleries in the country. A passionate painter for nearly all of her life, her most recent inspiration was to create an adult coloring book. “I’ve been working on writing three books for the past three years, and I thought a coloring book would be a really fun project,” Swayze said. “Plus, art can be very expensive, whereas a coloring book is accessible to almost anyone.” The drawings feature a variety of fish, turtles, seahorses and other creatures of the ocean, all drawn by Carroll. Want a purple seahorse or an orange tarpon? Once you buy the book, it’s all up to you. “I really enjoyed doing the drawings. They’re all fairly simple. It was fun, and it gave me something interesting to do while my other paintings were drying. It was actually more challenging than I originally thought it was going to be,” she said, adding that it was very difficult not to paint in all the drawings after she made them. Larger ones are on the righthand pages of the book, and the left pages consist of smaller drawings with inspirational phrases boxed around them. “I think it contains a nice combination of words and sketches,” she said.
