FROM THE EDITOR 14 GASPARILLA MAGAZINE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 Marcy Shortuse Editor-in-Chief November and December in Boca Grande are pretty cool. Not only is the weather a little cooler, but the mix of people is just about right for comfort; in other words, the nine-monthers come back. Those are the islanders who leave only during the hottest part of the year here but are chomping at the bit to return sometime around mid- October. The beaches are still uncrowded, but the restaurants and shops are open again. The annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which pretty much signifies the turn in the season for us. This Thanksgiving, one of the things I am most thankful for is to be able to live right next to the Gulf of Mexico. We get to see things that most people in the country never get to see. When I take my morning drive around the island, I stop by the beach-access streets without fail, and quite often as I’m staring out into the water I get to see dolphins and rays jumping. The way the clouds form, the different ways the waves roll in ... it’s still all magical to me after all this time. I’m also thankful for five of the most wonderful children to ever walk the face of Mother Earth and a husband who is my best friend. I’m thankful for clean water, especially because there are people around the world – and here in our country – that don’t have that luxury. I’m thankful for a great job, too, one that lets me tell people about one of the best places to be in the world. I’m hoping this Christmas season comes and goes and we find peace as a country, no matter who wins the election. I won’t give up hope that Americans will find ways to look beyond their differences and come together again. We are incredibly happy to announce the honors we received at the Florida Magazine Association Charlie Awards this year, held in Orlando at Walt Disney World’s Swan Hotel. You can read more about that inside, but keep in mind that we plan to be winning a lot more awards in the future.
