Jesuit Wins FHSAA’s Academic Team Champion Award esuit High School matched its excellence on the athletic fi elds in 2015- J 16 with excellence in the classroom. The Tigers placed 1st among all Class 5A boys athletic programs in the FHSAA’s Academic Team Champion (ATC) standings this past school year. Strong results across Jesuit’s 12 FHSAA sports programs, including a 1st place fi nish by the bowling team for the 3rd consecutive year and 4th time in 5 years, propelled the Tigers to the top spot with 73 points, ahead of runner-up Gainesville Eastside (43). The FHSAA’s ATC scoring system awards the school with the highest JESUIT SP RTS team GPA in its sport/classifi cation with 10 points, 2nd place earns 9 points, 3rd place 8 points, and so on. The football, swimming, wrestling, and track & fi eld teams each fared exceptionally well in the classroom for Jesuit, all fi nishing 2nd in their respective sport/classifi cation. Also, lacrosse placed 3rd, baseball and soccer earned 4th, and basketball fi nished 6th. Bowling had the highest team GPA among Jesuit sports with a 3.761 cumulative average, followed by swimming (3.587), tennis (3.553), and cross country (3.531). Tigers Top FHSAA’s Class 5A All-Sports Standings he Jesuit High School athletic program, under the guidance of athletic director Terry Rupp’84, once again excelled in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s All-Sports Award rankings in 2015-16. The Tigers earned the No. 1 spot among all boys sports programs in Class 5A; No. 1 among all boys sports programs in the Tampa Bay area by a wide margin; and the No. 3 ranking statewide among all Florida schools in all classifi cations. Leading the way were six teams that claimed District and Region championships: football (head coach Matt Thompson), golf (Nico Hohman ’07), swimming (Bill Shaffer), basketball (Neal Goldman), soccer (Eric Sims ’95), and tennis (Joe Curtis). The Tigers also claimed District championships in bowling, wrestling, baseball, and track & fi eld. Swimming fi nished as State runner-up, wrestling was 3rd at State, and football, basketball, and soccer all reached the State semifi nal. Over the past three school years, Jesuit has claimed District titles in 32 of 36 opportunities. Individually, several Tigers earned State championships in 2015-16, including swimmers Tommy Shaffer ’16, Byrne Litschgi ’16, Will Sands ’17, Sam Sands ’18, Chris Jennings ’18, and Matthew Dieffenthaller ’19, and wrestlers Brian Buser ’16, Adam Lewis ’16, and Julian Ramirez ’19. For several years running, Jesuit has topped the FHSAA’s all-sports standings for 5A boys programs and among all local schools, and in 2013-14 Jesuit ranked No. 1 among all schools in Florida. Davis Named Tampa Bay’s Top Player Malik Davis ’17 20 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2016 T Jesuit football celebrates defeating Tampa Catholic a 16th straight time, and it also had the No. 2 GPA among all Class 5A football programs Running back Malik Davis ’17, who set Jesuit rushing records for a game (357 yards vs. TC), season (2,337), and career (4,556) during the 2015 season, as well as the single-season touchdown record (28), was named the No. 1 prep football player in the Tampa Bay region by the Tampa Bay Times for this season. Davis is closing in on the Hillsborough County career rushing record of 5,765 yards set by Ray Ray McCloud at Sickles High from 2011-14 (McCloud now plays for Clemson).
