11th Annual Men for Others Dinner More than 600 fathers and sons enjoyed April’s Men for Others Dinner money was raised primarily through Dads’ Club coordination of parking for events at neighboring Raymond James Stadium. Salzsieder also presented the 2016 Michael G. Songy Award, the Dads’ Club’s highest honor, to Kevin O’Brien ’81, for his service to the Dads’ Club and Jesuit High School. Award namesake Mike Songy, P ’98, ’00 was present at the event along with several past recipients of the award. JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2016 11 ore than 600 fathers and sons from Jesuit High School enjoyed a wonderful evening April 24 at the 11th annual Men for Others Dinner at Higgins Hall. The keynote address was delivered by Vice Admiral Joe Maguire, a Navy SEAL who heads the non-profi t Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Maguire spoke of his extraordinary experiences as a SEAL, and examined the mission of Jesuit High School. His closing message was about how we all are capable of much more than we know. An annual highlight of the Men for Others Dinner are the two senior speakers. Shining in Summer - Jesuit Summer Bridge very day for fi ve weeks during the summer, more than 40 middle school boys come to Jesuit High School for the instructive, nurturing, and exciting Jesuit Summer Bridge program. Jesuit Summer Bridge connects Jesuit faculty and counselors to conscientious middle school students from more than 20 schools, mostly Hillsborough County public schools, daily from 8:00am to Noon. Comprehensive, action-packed, and off ered at a steeply discounted cost, Jesuit Summer Bridge completed its 6th year this summer. “We had a great summer,’’ said Jesuit math teacher Paula Collazo, the Jesuit Summer Bridge principal. “Each This year, John Bencivenga ’16 (father John Bencivenga) and Nick Perillo ’16 (father Joe Perillo) spoke about the tremendous positive impact their fathers have had on their lives. They explained how the unwavering presence and leadership of their fathers guided their families through adversity. Each year at the Men for Others Dinner, the Jesuit Dads’ Club, which coordinates the event, makes a generous donation to the school. This year, Dads’ Club president Tim Salzsieder, P ’16, ’20 presented Jesuit president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. with a gift from the Dads’ Club of $250,000. The year we’ve been building and making it even better for the students. The staff loves having an impact on students as they are forming the academic foundation for high school. And it’s great to see so many Jesuit Summer Bridge alumni coming back to help with the program.” Each day includes focused academic instruction in three areas – math, critical thinking, and language arts (grammar/ reading) – mixed with an array of specialty sessions such as robotics, cooking, music, and art, plus guest speakers, scienceoriented activities, Bricks4Kidz, and more.
