33 GASPARILLA MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 Goat Hill Goat Hill is one of the most famous haunted spots in the entire Arcadia area. It is, quite literally, located in the middle of nowhere just outside of town, and the road to get to it is now closed to the public. We were lucky enough to find property owners there who gave us a guided tour of the Goat Hill vicinity, and it is as haunting as it is beautiful. “Where did you hear about this?” the property owner said, obviously very curious. He admitted he had been hearing the stories for quite a long time, and while he and his wife hadn’t necessarily seen any of the mysterious orbs that are said to float around Goat Hill, they have definitely heard some very strange things out in their woods. Goat Hill is a lot larger than you would think it would be, probably at least three acres wide and about 15 feet taller at its apex than the land around it. It is covered by mossy, old-growth trees that seem to dare you to come closer. Unfortunately, we could not. The Peace River was flooded, and the land around Goat Hill was under at least two feet of water. We got close enough to get a good feel for the area, and to get some photographs. There is a beach nearby (which was also underwater), and under an old, tall tree there was a rope swing and a single little green car toy left abandoned in the sand. One ghost searcher posted on his blog that they got to the area by boat a few years ago, in the middle of the night. He and his friends said as they left their boat at the river’s edge and starting walking to the hill, they felt the hair stand up on the back of their necks and cold drafts of air. The cows that were there started to moo and move away. He described the orbs as orange in color to begin with, then began to take more of a definitive shape and turned bright white. They got bigger and bigger, and it seemed as though the wind was taking them toward his group. They left then, needless to say. There are two theories as to why Goat Hill is haunted by the mysterious orbs. The first is that they are related to the tragic deaths of the Richardson/Bryant children. Others say the orbs are the ghosts of the RAF pilots who are buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, out for a night of fun and haunting in the cow pastures. You can say you don’t believe in haunted places, but in October of 2013 another mystery was found at Goat Hill. A person’s body was recovered there, tangled in the willow trees at the water’s edge. No news stories were ever published after the body was found to determine the person’s identity or how they died.
