25 By Marcy Shortuse Photos from Beacon archives and from the Boca Bunch Keisling remembers one of his first experiences with the Boca Bunch. “The Bunch went on overnight camping trips back then,” DJ said. “We all piled in a 15-passenger van and went to DeSoto County, then camped overnight when it was 26 degrees outside.” Many years ago there were 50 to 60 kids involved in the program. Now there is approximately 25 who attend Bunch trips. If you have a child in the sixth to nine grade age range and you either live on the island or work on the island, he or she is eligible to join the Boca Bunch. “Our intent is to create some fun activities and adventures for these kids with new experiences and in the company of their pals,” Keisling said. “The Friends of Boca Grande Community Center is able to offer this program through the generous support of our donors and in conjunction with other island organizations.” If you have any ideas for some new experiences or would like to sponsor an activity contact the Friends organization at (941) 964-0827. And many, many thanks to Coach DJ for everything he does for the island’s kids. He is an asset to our community.
